Medicaid & Assisted Living

Years ago, Medicaid played no part at all in assisted living. It was entirely private pay. Today, it’s still heavily private pay, however there are options for people who are at risk of going into a nursing home. Medicaid has a goal of keeping people out of expensive nursing homes, so they are trying to put things in place to keep seniors in their homes and in assisted living facilities. Michigan has implemented something called the “Medicaid Waiver”. It will pay a facility directly for the care of a senior who is on Medicaid. There are quite a few rules associated with this though, and it’s not a simple thing to get your loved one enrolled in. However, it does exist, and is an option.
